A longer drive (about 50 min) can take you to Triplet Falls Melba Gully or The Otway Fly. Returning via Binns Road takes you past the magnificent Redwoods. Continue back down to the Great Ocean Road and turn right on your way back to Cape Otway, stopping at Maits Rest which has a remnant rainforest. Look out for the giant Mountain Ash trees along the way and stop to take in the tranquil sounds and the crystal clear air. Some of these trees are estimated to be over 200 years old. Known as the ‘Beacon of Hope,’ it sits 90 metres above the Bass Strait. The trees were planted in the 1930s by the State Forests Commission as an experimental logging plantation; however, they were never cut down and are now protected as part of the Great Otway National Park. The forest area is eerily quiet, with the occasional bird or trickle from the river and has a completely different atmosphere to the rest of the Otways.
